Momo Girl

I was a successful artist from primary school, I can remember making a stuffed lion, that got alot of praise, and was hung in the school library for a whole year.

That was a dream come true for a 9 year old who had just moved up from Auckland to Whangarei and didn’t know anyone in town.

It was like being welcomed by the whole school, and built my confidence up a notch.  I remember thinking, “this is how I can be noticed, and everyone will like me”.

Which is one of my flaws still today, I like to be liked, and I will go out of my way, so that you do.

As I grew into a fighting fit teenager, my passion for art was growing stronger.  I excelled in school c art and 6th form art.  I was the second highest student in correspondence Art in New Zealand, and I for sure wasn’t about to stop there.

I moved on from school to Northern Polytechnic where I studied there for a 3 year Diploma.  My second year I won DuPont Student Lycra Awards in Excersize Wear, in 1998, and was offered a number of jobs by a few great designers in Auckland.  Fortunately I chose to stay for my 3rd year, and  completed my Diploma with Honor, and then moved to the big smoke Auckland to pursue my fashion design career.

Unfortunately I was young, naive and star struck by all the clubs and bars in Auckland.  I was very distracted from my dream of being an international Fashion Designer, and owning a multinational street label, called momogirl.

Instead, I became a bartender and worked in the fun nightlife of bars and hospitality for 15 years, but never lost my passion for fashion.

What I can see now would of made all the difference, is a strong support structure, guidance, experience in business, and a point in the right direction.
